Vasectomy Pre-Procedure Instructions
- Be sure to have at home ibuprofen, or naproxen (Advil, Aleve), as well as some Acetaminophen (Tylenol).
- Ideally do not take aspirin or aspirin-containing products 5 days prior to your vasectomy.
- Shave the hair off of the front of the scrotum, and this should be done just under the penis where the penis joins the scrotum. Ideally this is a 2-to-3-inch circle of shaved scrotal skin. This shaving can be done either the night before the vasectomy or on the morning of the vasectomy, and take a shower after shaving.
- It is helpful if you also trim any pubic hair that can be stretched to reach the scrotum.
- We suggest that you wear sweatpants or other loose-fitting pants for a more comfortable ride home. You will leave the office with an ice bag in place.
- Feel free to bring your own music, earbuds, etc. if you would prefer to listen to relaxing music rather than to Dr. Curtis during the procedure.
- We encourage you to have someone to drive you home.
- If you choose to take a relaxant pill for the vasectomy, please arrive at the office 30 minutes prior to your procedure so that we can give you the relaxant and have time for it to kick in. In this case, it is required for you to have someone to drive you home.
